Dishwasher Leaked Overnight and Flooded the Kitchen — Now What?
The puddle in front of the dishwasher is the smallest part of the problem. Everything that matters is under the cabinets and under the floor.
Shut the water off at the dishwasher stop valve or the main, switch the circuit off, and do not pull the appliance out until the power is dead. Water from a dishwasher goes under the cabinets and under the flooring, not just across the floor you can see. Extract what you can, then get moisture readings taken under the toe-kicks before anything is reassembled.

Dishwasher leaks are deceptive in a very specific way. The water you can see, in front of the appliance, is the overflow — the part that could not fit anywhere else.
Most of what leaked went backwards and sideways: under the dishwasher itself, under the adjacent cabinet bases, under the flooring, and into the toe-kick voids that run the length of the kitchen.
That is why mopping the visible water and running the machine again is how a small appliance fault becomes a cabinet replacement.
First: stop the water and the machine
Cancel the cycle and switch the dishwasher off at the wall or at its breaker. Then close its supply valve — usually under the adjacent sink, sometimes behind the kick panel.
If water reached the outlet or the machine’s junction box, kill the circuit before touching anything else.
Second: work out which failure you have
Dishwashers leak in five common ways, and the location of the water tells you which.
- Door seal or gasket failure — water at the front, worst during the wash cycle.
- Supply line or connection — water at the back, present even when the machine is idle.
- Drain hose or connection at the disposal — water in the sink cabinet as well as the floor.
- Tub crack or corroded seam — steady seepage under the unit with no obvious external source.
- Overfill from a stuck float or valve — a large volume all at once, often overnight.
Third: look where the water actually went
Pull the kick panel off the front of the dishwasher — usually two screws — and look and feel underneath. Water sitting on the subfloor under the machine is extremely common and completely invisible from the kitchen.
Then open the cabinets either side and feel the base panels, particularly at the back corners. Particle-board and MDF cabinet bases absorb water, swell and delaminate, and they do it from underneath where you cannot see.
Finally check the flooring. Vinyl plank, laminate and engineered wood all trap water beneath them. Lifting edges, cupping boards, or a hollow sound underfoot mean water is under there.
Fourth: photograph, then call for a moisture map
Photograph the appliance, the visible water, the underside once the kick panel is off, and the cabinet interiors.
Then get moisture readings taken. A meter through the cabinet base and along the toe-kick tells you in twenty minutes whether this is a mop-up or a drying job, and it is the only way to know without dismantling the kitchen.
What proper drying looks like in a kitchen
Kitchens are the hardest common room to dry, because everything worth drying is enclosed. Cabinet bases, toe-kick voids and the space beneath the flooring have no airflow at all.
The technique is targeted rather than general: drill or open small access points into the toe-kick voids, push dry air into the cavities, and where flooring is trapping water, either lift a section or use a mat system to draw moisture up through it. Air movers pointed at the room from across the kitchen accomplish essentially nothing.
Readings are taken inside the cabinet bases and under the flooring, not on the surface. Drying stops when those numbers match a dry control elsewhere in the house.
When cabinets can be saved and when they cannot
Solid wood and plywood cabinet boxes usually survive if they are dried quickly. Particle board and MDF often do not — once the material has swollen and the glue bond has failed, it does not recover, and a swollen base under a heavy stone worktop is a structural problem as well as a cosmetic one.
The distinction is worth establishing early, because a cabinet run that has to be replaced changes the whole scope — worktop removal, plumbing disconnection, and matching or replacing the rest of the kitchen so it looks like one room.
Preventing the next one
Dishwashers give warning signs, and they are easy to check twice a year.
- Pull the kick panel once a year and look underneath for staining, corrosion or damp.
- Check the door gasket for cracks and food debris; clean it and replace it when it hardens.
- Look at the supply connection at the back for green corrosion or mineral crust.
- Run the machine when you are home rather than overnight or while out — the single most effective habit change.
- Fit a leak sensor in the cabinet next to it. They are inexpensive and they alarm before the water reaches the room.

Can I just run the dishwasher again and see if it leaks?
Not until you have looked underneath. If water is already sitting on the subfloor under the machine, another cycle adds to it and buys nothing. Diagnose first, then test.
Is a dishwasher leak covered by insurance?
A sudden failure and the resulting damage is usually covered. A slow leak that has clearly been weeping for months can be declined as maintenance — which is why the annual look under the kick panel is worth doing.
The floor looks fine. Do I need anything done?
Get readings. Vinyl plank, laminate and engineered wood all hide water underneath perfectly for days before anything shows on the surface, and by the time boards cup the subfloor has been wet the whole time.
