Washing Machine Supply Line Burst: 5 Steps to Limit the Damage

The single most common cause of a major residential water loss is a $15 hose. Here is what to do when yours goes, and how to make sure it never happens again.

A burst washing machine hose delivers water at full household pressure continuously until someone shuts it off, which is why it is one of the most damaging residential failures there is. Close the laundry stop valves or the main, kill power to the area if water has spread, photograph everything, and call for extraction before the water reaches adjoining rooms.

Insurance data has said the same thing for years: appliance supply hose failures are among the most expensive residential water losses there are. Not because the component is important, but because it fails at full household pressure and usually when nobody is home.

A braided stainless hose is rated for roughly five to seven years. Most of the ones we see have been in place for fifteen or twenty. They fail at the crimped fitting, without warning.

If yours has just gone, here is the sequence.

Step 1: close the valves behind the machine

There are two — hot and cold — on the wall behind or beside the washer, often inside a recessed box. Close both fully. If they are the older round-handled type and will not turn, do not force them to the point of snapping; go to the main house shutoff instead.

This is also the moment to note whether those valves work at all. Seized laundry valves are extremely common, and discovering it during a flood is the wrong time.

Step 2: kill the power to the laundry area

Washing machines are on a dedicated circuit and the water is now on the floor around it. Switch the circuit off at the panel from a dry position before you go into the room to deal with anything else.

Step 3: work out where the water went — including downstairs

This is the step that decides how big the loss actually is. Water on a laundry floor spreads under the machine, under the adjacent wall base, and out through the doorway.

If the laundry is upstairs — which describes a great many Mission Viejo two-storey homes and almost all of the 1990s and 2000s tracts in Painted Trails, Ladera Ranch and Aliso Viejo — go downstairs and look at the ceiling below. Also check the room below that, and any wall directly beneath the laundry.

  • Look inside any cabinet or closet backing onto the laundry wall.
  • Check the garage if the laundry backs onto it.

Step 4: photograph and then limit the spread

Photographs first, movement second. Get the water at full extent, the failed hose still attached, the machine, and everything that got wet.

Then lift what you can off the floor, put blocks or foil under furniture legs in affected rooms, and towel or squeegee standing water on hard surfaces. Do not run fans or the HVAC.

Step 5: call for extraction before you decide it is fine

The reason this failure produces such large claims is that the visible water is a fraction of the total. Carpet pad holds several times its own weight. Wall bases wick. Floor assemblies in two-storey homes hold water in the cavity between levels where nothing shows at all until the ceiling below starts to change.

A moisture map takes twenty minutes and either finds the extent or tells you there is nothing more to worry about. Both are worth having.

Making sure it never happens again

This is the most preventable major loss in residential property, and the fix takes twenty minutes.

  1. Replace both hoses every five to seven years regardless of appearance, and immediately if you see rust at the crimp, bulging, or any weeping.
  2. Use braided stainless rather than rubber, and do not overtighten — hand tight plus a quarter turn.
  3. Turn the valves off when you go away for more than a few days. It costs nothing.
  4. Consider a leak sensor on the laundry floor, or an automatic shut-off valve if the laundry is upstairs over finished space.
  5. Leave a gap behind the machine so the hoses curve rather than kink against the wall.

Why upstairs laundries produce the biggest losses

A hose failure at floor level in a garage spreads sideways and stays on one plane. The same failure upstairs drains into the floor assembly and out through the ceiling below, affecting two levels, the insulation between them, and frequently a wall cavity on the way.

That is why the same $15 component produces a $2,000 claim in one house and a $25,000 claim in another. If your laundry is upstairs over finished living space, treat those hoses as the highest-priority maintenance item in the building.

Is this covered by insurance?
